The National Commissioner of Police, in consultation with the Commissioner of Police in Suðurnes, cancels the level of uncertainty of the Civil Defense due to the earthquake on the Reykjanes peninsula.
This is stated in the announcement.
Inflation was measured west of Þorbjörn in the period 28 April - 28 May and the largest increase was 5.5 cm. At the same time, seismic activity increased and about 800 earthquakes were recorded per day at its peak. The reason for the Inflation is considered to be the formation of intrusions in similar areas as the three intrusions that occurred until 2020.
The event in May is a continuation of the unrest on the Reykjanes peninsula that began at the end of 2019. There has been a lot of seismic activity since then, several intrusions have formed and an eruption occurred in Geldingadalur in 2021.
" This sequence of events and the history of volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula support the fact that a new period of eruptions may be beginning on the Reykjanes peninsula. The last period lasted from 800-1240 and 18 eruptions occurred in 440 years. During this time, lava flowed from the volcanic systems of Reykjanes, Svartsengi, Krýsuvík and Brennisteinsfjöll, "says the announcement.
The civil defense, state, municipalities and companies in the area will continue work on risk assessment, mitigation measures and response planning in order to be prepared for a long period of unrest on the Reykjanes peninsula.
