Ground inflation at Þorbjörn and Fagradalsfjall and the earth trembles

Ground inflation is at Þorbjörn and Fagradalsfjall. This was stated in the RÚV lunch news. About 400 earthquakes have occurred on the Reykjanes peninsula since midnight and 900 earthquakes have occurred in the last 24 hours.

Seismic activity continues on the Reykjanes peninsula. Five earthquakes over magnitude 3 were measured at Reykjanestá yesterday. Kl. GPS stations in the vicinity of Þorbjörn have in the last two weeks shown changes that indicate slight expansion at Svartsengi.

"These displacements we see are still small, around 10-15mm where they are greatest," says Benedikt G. Ólafsson, a specialist in crustal movements at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, but Benedikt in collaboration with the University's Institute of Earth Sciences closely monitors crustal movements in the area.
