Earthquakes: Week overview 19 February - 25 February


Around 820 earthquakes were detected last week by the SIL seismic network at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, most of them were a part of a seismic swarm at the island Grimsey. The largest earthquake of last week was of magnitude M5.2. It was detected at Grimsey on February 19th; that day around 40 earthquakes of magnitude M3.0 or higher were detected at the island. An earthquake of magnitude M3.6 occurred in Öxarfjordur on February 22nd and the same day, an earthquake of magnitude M3.1 occurred on Hellisheidi. Around 30 earthquakes were detected in Öræfajökull last week. Seismic activity was pretty low in other areas.
