Ragnar Axelsson has flown three trips over Öræfajökull since the cauldron was first seen on November 17th. He flew the first trip November 19th, back November 28th and then the third trip on December 11th. Researchers at the University of Iceland Volcanology and Natural Sciences Group estimated that the cauldron had been 22 meters deep and about a kilometer in diameter on November 19th. After the flight on November 28, the cauldron measured about 1.200 m in diameter, between the most visible fissures, and it was estimated that the cauldron had doubled tp over 40 meters deep. A three-dimensional model and a combined aerial image were made after the third flight.
